Lionel Messi set to beat Cristiano Ronaldo with third FIFA Ballon d'Or Award

The Ballon d'Or award's most probable winner Lionel Messi will be very delighted to have the award in his hands. The brilliant Argentine is on the verge of a very special hat-trick, and can also equal the achievements of three-time World Player of the Year winners Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo.
Lionel Messi, barring the ballot-bearing of a banana republic, is favourite to be crowned as World Player of the Year at Monday’s annual Fifa Gala in Zurich. It may not be coincidence that Real Madrid have already announced that Cristiano Ronaldo will not be attending.

He will also be the first player to win the Fifa accolade for three successive years after heading off Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009 and Barcelona team-mate Andres Iniesta in 2010.

Simultaneously, and this is where it begins to become complicated, Messi will become the fourth player to win the Ballon d’Or three times, after Johan Cruyff, Michel Platini and Marco van Basten, and the second to win it three years in succession after Platini – current Uefa president – in 1983, 1984 and 1985.
